Steven Marcus

FOUNDER, THE PREP CONNECTION

Let's Connect

I have been involved in prep school athletics since 2006. As a 2010 graduate of Wilbraham & Monson Academy, where I was a three sport athlete, I saw firsthand the impact that prep school athletics can have on one’s future and career. It was during this time that I discovered my passion for working in basketball and recognized, drawing from my own experience, how I could provide assistance to families navigating the intricate path to college through preparatory school.

In 2010 I matriculated onto St. Bonaventure University, where I was a 4 year member of the Division 1 men’s basketball program. During my tenure, we won the 2012 Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship, advancing to play in the NCAA tournament.

Additionally, during my college summers, I began helping players find the right prep schools as the Director of Team Operations/Recruiting for a nationally ranked adidas 3SSB program. It was during this time that The Prep Connection started to take shape. I spent six years with this organization, culminating with the 2017 adidas Super 64 Championship in Las Vegas. That team had players matriculate onto Kansas, Michigan State, Elon, Boston College, Davidson, Northeastern, Princeton, and Vermont. During my time with the program, we helped hundreds of young athletes attend prep schools and embark onto Division I, II and III colleges and universities.

Upon graduation, my basketball coaching and recruiting experiences include the following:

  • Brown & White TBT Coach | 2021-2022
  • Head Coach and General Manager, St. John’s Edge (NBL Canada) | 2019-2021
  • Associate Head Coach and General Manager, St. John’s Edge (NBL Canada) | 2017-2019
  • Graduate Assistant, North Carolina State University | 2016-2017
  • NBA Summer League Staff | 2015-2016
  • McDonald’s All American Game Staff | 2015-2016
  • adidas Eurocamp Staff | 2014-2017
  • adidas Sports Marketing | 2014-2017
  • Assistant Director of Basketball Operations, Maine Red Claws (Boston Celtics NBA G-League Affiliate) | 2014-2016

My goal at The Prep Connection is to leverage all of my past experiences, with all of my present connections, to cultivate your ideal prep school experience. The ever-changing landscape of prep school athletics can be daunting; let me connect you through all the proper channels to help find you the best possible fit.

I have known Steve since we worked together at the NBA Summer League and adidas Nations. I trust in Steve’s ability to identify players and believe in his system with The Prep Connection. Over the years Steve has alerted me to numerous players I should recruit and he has never led me astray with his assessment of student-athletes.”

Having graduated from Vanderbilt and UMass and now in my 3 rd year playing professionally

FAQs

  • What is Prep School?

A preparatory school, often referred to as a prep school, is a private secondary educational institution that prepares students for higher education. These schools are known for offering a rigorous academic curriculum, diverse extracurricular activities, and a strong sense of community. They often offer advanced placement (AP) courses, honors classes, and comprehensive college counseling services, tailoring to the needs of each individual student. Let The Prep Connection connect you with a vast array of prep schools.
  • Day Student versus Boarding Student?

While some prep schools are day schools, meaning students commute to campus, others are boarding schools, where students live on campus. Boarding schools often provide a more immersive educational experience and foster a strong sense of community.
  • How will attending prep school help with a player’s college recruiting?

Attending a prep school can provide several benefits for athletic development. Prep schools often have experienced and specialized coaches who can provide focused training and guidance in specific sports. You will participate in highly competitive leagues, providing you with the opportunity to practice and compete against the best, on a daily basis. Prep schools also often provide players an extra year to mature, not only athletically, but also in the classroom.
  • How do families pay for prep school?

Schools will often have multiple avenues for tuition payment. The first option is to pay tuition up front at the start of each school year; the second option is to pay tuition at the start of each semester. Many schools will also offer payment plans for families, allowing you to pay on a quarterly or monthly basis. Families can also apply and qualify for financial aid. By submitting financial information, prep schools will learn what a family’s estimated contribution will be, and then award scholarship based on financial need, academics, athletic eligibility, GPA, test scores, and more.
  • Why should you consider prep school?

Prep schools are known for their challenging academic programs. They offer advanced coursework, smaller class sizes, and a strong emphasis on critical thinking skills. There are often specialized college counseling services, standardized test preparation, and a curriculum designed to enhance college readiness. In addition, their athletics departments are unique, in that they offer year round training, highly competitive leagues, and well developed coaches. Lastly, prep schools attract students and families from across the country and around the world, allowing athletes to network not just domestically but also globally.
