Student-Athlete Prep School FAQs
We know the prep school athletics process can feel confusing. Let us be your guide. We’ve put together these FAQs to help answer some common questions. When you’re ready, contact us to schedule a call.
What is The Prep Connection and how does it help student-athletes in different sports reach the prep school level?
The Prep Connection is a consulting service that helps families navigate the prep school athletics process. We streamline communication with coaches and admissions offices, connecting student-athletes directly with the appropriate head coaches to begin the recruiting process.
How does your process work if my child plays a sport other than basketball?
The process is fairly similar for any sport. We work on behalf of the family and student-athlete to go directly to the coaching staff and admissions offices, using our connections throughout the prep school landscape to help you find the best fit, both academically and athletically.
At what age or grade should we start working with you if our child hopes to use prep school as a path to college athletics?
We work with families throughout their children’s high school careers -- from rising 8th graders just beginning the prep school process, to graduating seniors seeking a postgraduate year opportunity.
How can attending a prep school improve my child’s chances of being recruited to play their sport in college?
With the way college athletics are trending in the NIL era, it is now even more important to compete against the best of the best, and the prep school level helps you accomplish that. If reclassification is an option, becoming a year more mature, both academically but also physically, has become even more attractive to college coaches with how competitive the transfer portal has become.
What does the initial consultation with The Prep Connection look like for families of student-athletes?
During our initial consultation, which typically happens via phone call or Zoom, we love to get to know families, while looking at transcripts and any highlights or full game film. From there we determine the proper level of school to reach out to.
How do you help us identify the right prep schools that fit both academics and athletics for our child’s specific sport?
The NEPSAC is broken down into different classifications. From AAA all the way down to Class D. These classifications are broken down by school size, but also level of play. We will use our expertise to help find as perfect of a fit as we can to match your child up with the right level of play, while still considering the appropriate level of academic rigor.
What kind of player profile or materials do you help create to showcase my child to prep school coaches?
We take your child’s highlights or full game film and put them into a private YouTube link that only the people we send the link to have access to watch. The more information we have, the better.
How do you support families through the prep school admissions and recruiting process from start to finish?
We work for you. No question is too big or too small. Whatever you need throughout this process, we are here for. Depending on the timing of engaging with our services, we will have weekly or bi weekly Zoom calls to catch up and see how the talks with coaching staffs and admissions offices are going. Once the applications and financial aid documents are in, we wait until we hear from the schools on admission. Normally, if the family is open to it, we will be tipped off from the coach or admission officers to know one way or the other if your child will be accepted, and what that total package looks like.
Do you only work with families in Massachusetts, or do you support student-athletes across all of New England and beyond?
No! We work with families from across the United States, sometimes even working with families from around the world.
How familiar are you with prep school athletic programs in states like Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and the rest of New England?
The majority of our strongest connections are in the NEPSAC, which is the New England Prep School Athletic Council. The NEPSAC is composed of nearly 180 prep schools all across New England and New York
Can you work with a family that doesn’t live in New England but wants to place their child in a New England prep school?
Yes! As long as the family is comfortable with their son or daughter being a boarding student, there are options for families to send their son or daughter to a school that is far away.
How do you stay connected with prep school coaches and programs throughout Massachusetts and the broader New England region?
It is a two way street with a lot of these coaches. They reach out to us to see who we are working with and what they need roster wise for the following season. The conversations we have with coaches happen every single day.
Are there differences in the recruiting path for New England student-athletes compared with those in other regions?
In our opinion, depending on the level your son or daughter wants to play collegiately, there is no better place to be a high school athlete than in New England at the NEPSAC level. It has the best combination of academics and athletics in the country.
How do you support local Massachusetts families differently from families who live outside New England?
If families live locally and want their son or daughter to be a day student, we can narrow our search to schools within a certain distance to your home so that the daily commute is exactly what you’re comfortable with.
What should New England parents know about timelines and key dates for applying to regional prep schools for athletics?
January 1, January 15th, February 1st and February 15th. Those are key deadlines for schools that do not use rolling admission. Now, lots of schools use rolling admission, but to get your application in by those above dates guarantees you will hear one way or the other from admissions by March 10th. If the family is applying for financial aid, the sooner those applications are in, the more of the pie is available for that family to be eligible for.
What is Prep School?
A preparatory school, often referred to as a prep school, is a private secondary educational institution that prepares students for higher education. These schools are known for offering a rigorous academic curriculum, diverse extracurricular activities, and a strong sense of community. They often offer advanced placement (AP) courses, honors classes, and comprehensive college counseling services, tailoring to the needs of each individual student. Let The Prep Connection connect you with a vast array of prep schools.
Day Student versus Boarding Student?
While some prep schools are day schools, meaning students commute to campus, others are boarding schools, where students live on campus. Boarding schools often provide a more immersive educational experience and foster a strong sense of community.
How will attending prep school help with a player’s college recruiting?
Attending a prep school can provide several benefits for athletic development. Prep schools often have experienced and specialized coaches who can provide focused training and guidance in specific sports. You will participate in highly competitive leagues, providing you with the opportunity to practice and compete against the best, on a daily basis. Prep schools also often provide players an extra year to mature, not only athletically, but also in the classroom.
How do families pay for prep school?
Schools will often have multiple avenues for tuition payment. The first option is to pay tuition up front at the start of each school year; the second option is to pay tuition at the start of each semester. Many schools will also offer payment plans for families, allowing you to pay on a quarterly or monthly basis. Families can also apply and qualify for financial aid. By submitting financial information, prep schools will learn what a family’s estimated contribution will be, and then award scholarship based on financial need, academics, athletic eligibility, GPA, test scores, and more.
Why should you consider prep school?
Prep schools are known for their challenging academic programs. They offer advanced coursework, smaller class sizes, and a strong emphasis on critical thinking skills. There are often specialized college counseling services, standardized test preparation, and a curriculum designed to enhance college readiness. In addition, their athletics departments are unique, in that they offer year round training, highly competitive leagues, and well developed coaches. Lastly, prep schools attract students and families from across the country and around the world, allowing athletes to network not just domestically but also globally.
The Prep Connection Experience
Hear directly from families who trusted The Prep Connection to guide their student-athlete through every step of the journey.
I have known Steve since I was 14 years old and first came to the United States from Haiti. Steve helped me find my first prep school at Wilbraham & Monson Academy and then when I needed to make a move to Texas for family reasons, Steve was the first person I consulted. Having graduated from Vanderbilt and UMass and now in my 3 rd year playing professionally overseas, I attribute the majority of my early success to Steve and all of his help and guidance.

Steve and TPC not only helped me find my first prep at Tabor Academy but when I was ready to make the jump to play at a higher level at Brewster Academy, Steve sent me all of the proper information that I needed to confirm I was making the correct decision.”

Jarred Reuter

Steve was incredibly instrumental helping me navigate the prep school landscape. Leaving my public school in East Hartford (CT) and transitioning to St. Thomas Moore (CT) I was able to elevate not only my basketball career but solidify myself academically to prepare myself for the next level.

Steve was a massive support system for me throughout my High School career. He was always there when I needed advice for both where to attend prep school but also where I should play in college. I am excited to follow this next journey for Steve and The Prep Connection and I could not recommend him more.
